Transworld Snowboarding is reporting that snow has already started falling in the mountains in Breckenridge / Vail Colorado. This is good news because I like snow. Unfortunately it’s supposed to be 33 degrees here in Toronto tomorrow with the humidity and I heard a report this morning about a mild, snow-less winter this year, weak.

Breckenridge and Keystone resorts open in just 53 days on November 9th. It’s only a 24 hour drive from Toronto, who’s up for a road trip in November?

After driving all the way to Burlington to see a show that was canceled 10 minutes before we got there, Alison and I decided to check out some of the snowboard shops in the area. We’d seen the new Burton boards at almost every shop we’ve been to this month but we wanted to see if any other brands had started shipping yet.

We got lost on our way to Corbett’s (which sucks) and came across an awesome little shop called Hustler Snowboards in the heart of Oakville. After checking out some awesome prices on last years boards, I noticed they had a bunch of “Picture This” DVDs behind the counter. The dude working told me they just got them in yesterday, I bought one immediately.

The trailer I posted a week ago was just the tip of the ice berg, this video is insane. As usual the riders are top notch and the tricks are the best I have ever seen. The perfectly chosen music is synched to the action on screen better then most high budget music videos.

Highlights include Jussi Oksanen and Jeremy Jones as usual but 2 things REALLY stood out in this video. First, J.P. Walker does some type of wild flip in a corner between 2 walls at the end of the video, he doesn’t even have a full part in the video. Second, and most amazing of all, is an entire half pipe duet featuring Shaun White and Kevin Pearce. The best type of snowboarding, half pipe combined with the best half pipe rider, Shaun White. This is what you get when you watch a Mack Dawg video, the best of the best filmed like you’ve never seen snowboarding filmed before.

Amazing, buy it now. If you can’t afford $40, come over to my place, I’ll gladly watch it again, and again, and again…

P.S. Why is the Mack Dawg site always down?

P.P.S. I don’t think this video comes out for another couple of weeks. Maybe these dudes weren’t supposed to sell it to me yet….

Mack Dawg’s videos may cost a bit more than your average snowboarding video but that’s because he doesn’t make average snowboarding videos. This guy knows what he’s doing, and after seeing this trailer I’ll be putting $50 aside for his new video this fall.

Alternative 311 unveiled the 07/08 Burton line at midnight and I’m excited. I’ve been saving up for a new board all summer and there are actually a few that I am really into. The Jeremy Jones signature model below is my favourite so far.

EDIT: Burton has now launched the new gear on their site. Turns out the board above is a total park board and I need something more versatile. The search continues…. Check out the new gear on Burton’s site.

Is it winter yet?

A few days ago Alison brought home a copy of Ski & Snowboard Canada magazine’s resort guide. That magazine and this unbearable 40 degree weather were all it took to get me longing for winter.

Think of how lame summer is.

Instead of wearing thick, knee high snowboard socks I’m wearing thin ankle socks so I don’t look silly when I wear shorts. Instead of avoiding trees while on a snowboard I’m desperately trying to find trees so I can hide in their shade. Instead of using massive amounts of energy to have a ski lift pull me to the top of a mountain I’m using massive amounts of energy to keep my apartment cool enough to sleep at night.

Lame!

Since I don’t have the money to fly to New Zealand, Australia, Chile or Argentina I’ll just have to pray for an early snowfall in this part of the world. I’ll count down the days until the Toronto Ski & Snowboard show (74), curl up on the couch in my cool, air conditioned apartment, close the blinds and pretend that every street sweeper or garbage truck that drives by outside is a groomer grooming the runs outside my window.
