I got an email last night from CR Rollyson, he recorded guitar and vocals over one of the drum beats I had posted and wanted me to hear it. He’s the first person to ever send me anything that’s been created with the drum beats I give away for free. I think it’s awesome.

While visiting Victoria, B.C. we went to Fisherman’s Wharf to buy a few crabs for dinner. There’s a seal that hangs out looking cute and begging for fish so I filmed it with my Flip Mino HD. Then I did the logical thing and recorded myself drumming, added crazy effects and made it the soundtrack; sweet?

More Free GarageBand Drum Loops – Rock and HipHop

Over 325 people have downloaded my first set of free GarageBand drum loops so I decided to make more. This time I made the loops longer to give you the option to cut out whatever you want to use or keep the whole thing as is. There are 2 Rock drum loops and one HipHop drum loop. These free GarageBand drum loops are made using electronic drums in my apartment. I play to a metronome and the loops are not quantized in order to keep the feel. They are free so go ahead and use them. If you get rich using them I might call you begging for a cut but if you ask me to drum for you when you tour we might call it even.

I hope you like them and I want to make them better so please leave feedback and I’ll keep at it.

Import the MP3 files into Garageband.
Make loops (track > add to loop library) if that’s your thing.

There’s nothing I love more than laying down a solid groove on the drums. With the recent popularity of mash ups it seems that everyone is looking for nice clean drum beats to sample so I made some. These free GarageBand drum loops are made using electronic drums in my apartment and they are free so go ahead and use them. If you get rich using them I might call you begging for a cut but if you ask me to drum for you when you tour we might call it even.

I hope you like them and I want to make them better so please leave feedback and I’ll keep at it.

Steve and I got together again and reworked a song we had written and recorded years ago. This time we used the same Micro POG octave pedal as last time but we ran the higher octave through a Little Big Muff and into it’s own channel in the mixer. The dry bass signal went through the Fulltone Bass Drive and the Sans Amp into another channel in the mixer. The high bass and low bass were panned to different sides and it was awesome and super heavy.

This song uses some weird time signatures and a lot of poly rhythms, it took me forever to figure it out, I’m an idiot.

It’s been almost three and a half months and we have another song. This time it’s just me and Steve (drums and bass) but it sounds full thanks to the Fulltone Bass drive and the Micro POG. We really like this song, it’s a slow jam….

MIDI & Electronic Drum Experiment #1

I plugged my electronic drums into my computer with a MIDI – USB cable, picked a punchy grand piano sound in Garage Band and started playing piano on the drums. I duplicated that track twice, once using drum sounds and once using bass sounds. When it was all done I had created 1 minutes and 20 seconds of some sort of weird tech rock. I like it.

We got together and did some more songwriting today. We talk more than we play and I’m too stupid to remember complicated parts these days so all we have to show is half a song but it has bass! Check it out, it’s the only time you’ll ever hear me play a straight up punk beat.

The Original Sick Ship

When writing about the start of the Sick Ship songwriting project I forgot to mention that Steve and I had a very similar band about a year ago with Kristen of Wheels On The Bus. We wrote a bunch of songs at a real rehearsal space, no headphone jams, but we recorded the same way, in my apartment live off the floor into a mixer into one track in GarageBand.

Here are 3 complete songs, these ones even have bass!
